FAQs

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

As a hobbyist or a commercial pilot, you need to have completed some sort of training and certification in order to reduce the risk of operating within a congested area. Completing your A2 CofC ensures you have a basic competency when it comes to operating drones. Depending on the aircraft you are operating and the area you are operating in it is likely to be a legal requirement to have the A2 CofC.

We want to make sure that everyone who is required to have an A2 CofC by law can access it.

With over 200,000 drone pilots in the UK, it's essential that we now all fly legally and safely when required to do so.

It's good for you, it's good for other people, and it's good for the industry.

Our exams are invigilated online by a third party using their own remote support software.

The invigilator will check your surroundings via your webcam to ensure you are alone and aren’t using any notes to cheat on the exam, but you won’t be able to physically talk to them, you can only communicate through the chat.

You’re not allowed to have any materials present, including pen and paper.

Please note: If your internet is provided by Talk Talk you will need to turn off the HomeSafe setting as this blocks the remote support software.

Unfortunately not. To sit the final exam you will need to have access to a computer with a webcam and a working microphone.

Most computers have webcams built-in but if yours doesn’t, you can use an external USB webcam.

The only thing you need to have with you on exam day is a form of valid photo ID such as a passport or driver’s license.

The A2 CofC is a theoretical examination only but is predicated on a ‘building block’ process of training and testing which is listed in the following paragraph.

There are no practical flight test requirements for the A2 CofC. Prior to taking the examination, the remote pilot is required to have completed the following ‘building blocks’:

  • Successful completion of the CAA’s ‘Drone and Model Aircraft’ online training course for basic remote pilot competency and the associated competency test, and be in possession of the ‘Flyer ID’ number associated with that test;
  • Completion of a period of practical flight training, either under the guidance of an RAE or under ‘self-monitored’ circumstances, conducted within the operating conditions of subcategory A3 but simulating the operating situations associated with the A2 subcategory.

Furthermore Coptrz RAE Technical Procedures state: A2 COFC SELF DECLARATION

  • Before a candidate can progress to the Theory examination, they must complete a period of guided or self-study practical flight training.
  • Once completed it is to be submitted to Coptrz for verification, along with flight logs showing a period of flying (Coptrz recommend a minimum of 4 hours to complete all areas of the flight training)

With the A2 CofC you can not carry out any overflight of uninvolved persons. If you’re planning on using your drone for commercial operations, you may find this enormously restrictive.

It all depends on what you want to do next.

Most people go on to get their GVC Drone Qualification, some people just stick with the A2 CofC because it's all they need.

What we always recommend is to talk to our Admissions Team to figure out your next step.

3-5 working days.

The regulations now refer to the risk of flight rather than commercial use, everyone operating under this category needs the A2 CofC even if they are not operating commercially. As long as you follow the A2 Open Category guidelines and have DMARES you can operate commercially with an A2 CofC. However, you can not carry out overflight and you must not fly closer than 50m horizontally from uninvolved persons.

The A2 CofC is relevant for all UK air law. Each country has their own country-specific laws, so if you are looking to fly internationally then you would have to obtain certification from that state or enquire as to whether they would recognise the A2 CofC there.

No, you must fly under the A3 subcategory whilst accumulating your 4 hours of flight time for the A2 CofC, or you may operate under the A1 subcategory if you are flying a drone under 250g. You cannot fly under the A2 subcategory under any circumstances before obtaining your certificate from the A2 CofC course.
